EXERPT OF AN ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL INTERVIEW WITH LINDA CASTANEDA:

Time in business: The business was initially started on March 1997.  Normal store hours: 10 am to 6 pm, Wed. thru Friday and 10 am to 5 pm on Saturdays. Appointments are available for that personal attention.

Education: I’ve earned an engineering degree.  Currently I am certified as a Hypnotherapist.  I’ve attended and been certified under numerous wig designers’ training programs and have been awarded various certificates of achievement. Most recently I was awarded an Instructor’s certification from New Concepts Hair Goods, Inc., in technique, design, cutting and styling of hair replacements, wigs and hair pieces to include hair extensions.

How I started this business: I’ve always enjoyed wearing wigs or hair pieces, but frequently had a difficult time finding just the right one.  So, who better to sell wigs than someone who loves to wear them and appreciates good service? So I said to myself, “Why not me?” and so the rest is history.

Main responsibility: I am the ‘chief cook and bottle washer’. I do everything and I enjoy it.  I involve myself in all aspects of the business from greeting the clients, advertising and marketing.  The marketing portion blends in my public relations activities, in which I am a volunteer for the “Look Good, Feel Better” program for the American Cancer Society.  I visit local area hospitals as well as some located in surrounding areas, assisting the medical staff in any way possible to bring comfort and much needed support to their patients.

Best thing about the business: I strongly feel that the best thing about our business is that we make every conceivable effort to bring comfort and piece of mind to those clients that are receiving chemotherapy, have naturally thinning hair or are just having a very bad hair-day.  My reward is the smile of the acceptance of self-worth and self-appreciation from our clients.

Worst thing about the business: Not having enough time to provide our services to all those in need.  For that, we sincerely apologize however every client to us is of equal importance and not overlooked or forgotten.

Best thing about doing business in New Mexico: The diversity of the culture and the friendliness of its people.

Worst thing about doing business in New Mexico: With its mild year around climate and friendly people, I can’t think of anything at this time.

What is a distinct challenge to this business: Each client, brings with them their very unique demands and requests.  Fillings those needs and requests can be a challenge at times but it is well worth the effort when you see the smile on our satisfied clients.

What is the biggest worry about the business: Not having enough time and resources to cover the entire state, but we are certainly doing our best in that area.

What is your best business idea: Volunteering has provided excellent networking prospects and assistance. It has allowed me to focus on my weaknesses and promote my strengths. Of course, meeting new people is always an added benefit.

What was your worst business idea: Making the wrong decisions when first starting off, but quickly learning from them.

Future plans: Increasing our present inventory, enlarging our showroom and reaching out to surrounding areas statewide and even into other neighboring states.

Advice to someone who wants to get started in this field:  Regardless of which field is selected, believe in yourself and have plenty of patience.  Be willing to adapt and most importantly, learn from your mistakes.
