Zosia is this years Greatest New Mexican Dog!
Owner Debby writes: Finding Zosia: We were looking for a dog that needed a home: an athletic dog that could go with us camping, skiing, hiking, rollerblading and biking. Hum, an Australian Shepherd?
Our large yard included agility and tracking equipment, so there would be plenty to keep the new canine busy. We worked with several rescue organizations to find a female Aussie less than three years old that was looking for a home. Since my family is from Poland, we gave our rescued girl the Polish name for Sophie - Zosia. Near the time of the adoption, my mother was living at an inpatient hospice facility due to a severe stroke. Zosia and I visited each day until my mother died. People seemed to enjoy seeing the dog, and Zosia sure was a good companion for me. When my brother suggested that she become a therapy dog, it sounded like a great idea. Now she is registered with Therapy Dogs, Inc. and Southwest Canine Corps of Volunteers (SCCV) and works at the Veteran's Hospital, UNM Children's Hospital and the SCCV Read to the Dogs Program at the Public Library.
Since her adoption Zosia has earned 17 titles with the American Kennel Club and other dog associations, and is a Master Agility competitor. She loves tracking too, which simulates search and rescue. |

Week 4 Winner: Shaman
Owner Jani writes: Hello! My name is Jani and this is my companion Shaman. Shaman and I do therapy together, hence his name which roughly translates as medicine man. He earns his title because he had a keen sense of how to nurture adolescents and teens at a residential treatment facility in northern New Mexico where we work. I've seen him bring a young person out of isolation, out of trauma, and just generally give a teen the courage to open up about abuse of the past. He always seems to know what these kids need and although I am a therapist I believe he is more powerful and useful to these kids than I could even imagine being myself.
Shaman is shown here riding in our canoe on Cochiti Lake. Since he works hard during the week, I treat him to long hikes, and lots of boating and swimming on weekends. He is a real hunter and loves to chase rabbits, bugs, and tumble weeds across the desert. He is a wonder to watch run too because he glides like a greyhound and leaps up high every now and then to the delight of all who are there to witness his prowess.
Shaman is a rescue dog, he was snatched out of the grips of death row by a woman saint who loves dogs like so many of us. I adopted him at around 8 months old and we have become quick companions. He is a 2+ year old mut, and there is much debate as to what he might be made of. To me he is made of joy, love and sweet empathy. |
Week 3 Winner: McLovin'
Owner Richard writes: My dog's name is McLovin' and he has got to be the Greatest New Mexican Dog. McLovin' came to me from Norfolk, Virginia about 6 months ago. McLovin's original parents are in the military and were being transferred to Japan and had to find a good home for him. I had recently lost my Cocker Spaniel to old age in July of 2007. I had Black Dawg since he wandered into my studio apartment in Oklahoma City in my first year of law school in 1994. He was considered by everyone who knew him to be the most amiable, even- tempered, loving dog anyone had known. When I lost Black Dawg no one, including myself, ever believed it would be possible to find another dog with a similar personality. Then came McLovin!
McLovin is a Rottweiler and solely because of his breed might be thought to have a questionable disposition. Nothing could be further from the truth. When taking McLovin for walks, to the vet, or just in the presence of other dogs, large and small, McLovin has never so much as offered a growl. As evidenced by the pictures below, he is absolutely amazing with children. McLovin is the Greatest New Mexican dog because while he is the consummate companion he is the ultimate in home security as well.
I have had several people who have commented that when they attempted to come by my house when no one was home, one time for the purpose of feeding McLovin at my request, that McLovin growled and barked so ferocious that they would never consider coming any closer or into my home.
McLovin does need to do cute dog tricks. When I come home he can't get close enough to me and regularly tries to sit on my feet while standing next to him. He rides in my convertible with the top down and smiles to passerbyers. If I park and leave him in my car, with the top down, I don't have to say "stay" he simply remains in the car and trust me when I tell you - no one has ever taken anything from the car. At the same time, McLovin never grows or barks at anyone coming around the car. It is simply his presence and the public's perception that keeps any would-be thieves at bay.
McLovin is aptly named and is the most lovable and Greatest New Mexican dog anyone could ever ask for! I Love McLovin! |
Week 2 Winner: Mojo
Owner Natalie writes: My name is Natalie and this is my dog, Mojo. He is a Bichon Frise' (Yes, this is a breed of dog and NOT a French appetizer!) and I got him from a breeder in Los Lunas. He is two years old and really tired of being accused of being a "girl" dog 'cause he's so darned cute. He got the name "Mojo" because he cast his cuteness spell on us from the minute he stepped into our home. He was so tiny that I was in constant fear that he would be killed-by-recliner! None of us has consistently sat in that chair since we first got him. He and his best-doggie-bud, Lulu, have a very special relationship with our youngest son who is autistic. In fact, our youngest started speaking because of Mojo and Lulu and their special relationships. He and Lulu have their own blog, The Dog Blog, and "speak!" their minds freely. They are very concerned about the doggie citizens in the shelters and hope to help get the word out to increase adoptions. Between his work with differently-abled individuals and his pet awareness blogging efforts, he definitely deserves the title of Greatest New Mexican Dog!

Week 1 Winner: Dagwood
Owner Liz writes: Dagwood derived his name from the cartoon strip character because of his pronounced widow's peak hairdo. Dagwood is definitely a contender for the greatest New Mexican Dog, as he has often been
mistaken for a "teacup coyote". Dagwood enjoys dressing up and
prefers button downs, to pullovers. Hidden beneath his clothing is a strip of coarse hair that can best be described as "Mastodon fur" & often stands on end when he is afraid. Dagwood is often afraid tender to the touch. If he lets you pet him He is a Chihuahua X, but lots of people think he has Meerkat lineage. Dagwood's true age is unknown, but his owners had him for ten years.
